Policies relating to the examination of applicants for road tests. Effective January 16, 2023.
Authority
The Michigan Department of State (MDOS) designates Michigan Traffic Safety (MTS) as an approved third party testing organization, organization #929. The central office sits in St. Joseph County at 68730 County Farm Road, Sturgis, Michigan 49091.
MTS operates two test sites, Sturgis (site #01) and Three Rivers (site #02).
All test applicants must comply with the MDOS test requirements described in the Driving Skills Test Study Guide and follow MDOS testing program procedures. Every examiner completes training to administer all skills tests as MDOS requires.
Fees and Background
MTS offers road skills tests as a public service to the citizens of Michigan. Fees support traffic safety programs in southwest Michigan, pay examiners, maintain test sites, and cover administrative expenses. The following fee schedule applies at all MTS test sites.

We accept credit card, debit card, check, money order, and cash. Pay online through this website or by phone.
Incomplete tests
Examiners issue an incomplete (document, equipment, auto, or motorcycle) when the applicant does not bring the required documents or the vehicle does not pass inspection. A vehicle that breaks down or an applicant who becomes too ill to finish also results in an incomplete. Examiners use their discretion when incompletes or no-shows occur.
No-shows
A no-show forfeits the full test fee.
Cancellations
Call 1-866-433-1235 by 8:30 am on your test day to cancel at no charge. Later cancellations forfeit the full payment.
Re-tests
A re-test after failing the Basic Control Skills, Driving Skills Test, or Motorcycle Skills Test costs the same as the initial test. State regulations allow a re-test 24 hours after the original test. Schedule online or by phone.
Refunds
For all incomplete tests, we refund everything except $40.00 of the original test fee. If you schedule a future test, we apply the remaining $30.00 to it. MTS examiners may adjust fees or apply discounts for emergencies and special situations.
